Under funding provided by the U.S. Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission, the NECSC is currently developing two reference documents on energy-efficient community design and development. These are the:
- Reference Guide for Private Development Professionals – The first guide is being written specifically for private developers and builders. The guide will include commercially viable, integrated energy technology and community design options for high-efficiency, low-impact community development. The guide will contain specific recommendations for energy technology applications and energy-efficient development strategies for residential, commercial and institutional structures and for supporting municipal infrastructure for planned communities;
- Reference Guide for Financing Institutions & Public Agencies – The second guide is written for development and finance entities, State agencies, and local governments and will contain strategies to assist them in conditioning the marketplace to support energy-efficient community development. Specifically, the guide will contain innovative public policy, incentive & market mechanisms to accelerate investment in and use of advanced energy technologies and enabling community design options in development projects.
The NECSC is developing an outreach plan for the dissemination of these resource guides to these targeted audiences and for follow-up activities that will encourage their use.
As funding becomes available, the NECSC plans to produce additional resources, including:
- A Reference Guide to Sustainable Community Energy Best Practices – fashioned after the acclaimed U.S. Federal Energy Management Program guide;
- A Guide to Sustainable Community Energy Baseline Assessments and Benchmarking;
- An Online Information Clearinghouse – with links to the leading sustainable community energy resource organizations worldwide;
- Indicators and Metrics – suggested standards for the design of energy-efficient, environmentally benign buildings, transportation and environmental systems and other community infrastructure;
- Managers Guide to Sustainable Community Energy Technologies – designed to introduce non-technical audiences to advanced, energy-efficient technologies for infrastructure and building facilities, industrial manufacturing processes, and commercial, institutional and residential operations.
